The Sunshine Coast Legion Snooker League has been
in existence for 20 years. It was modelled after
the successful snooker league at the Army/Navy vets
in Vancouver.
Primary mover in the formation of the league was Len Homenchuk, who announced the opening of play in 1991.
Currently we have 7 teams operating out of the Royal Canadian Legions on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada. This year we welcome a new Women's team playing out of Roberts Creek, joining their male counterparts there as well as a team in Gibsons and 4 teams from Sechelt. Each team plays one evening per week from September to April.
We play with doubles pairings in a round robin format. Every team has 3 pairs who play one game each against the opposing teams 3 pairings. An evening session consists of 9 games so there is always a winner on the night. Game wins are worth one point.
Wins are tallied weekly and the team with the most points at the end of the year is awarded the Bill Baycroft Trophy as League Champions.
Throughout the year there are singles and doubles competitions, an all-star contest and league playoffs.
We wind up the season with a Banquet and Awards ceremony, where the winners receive their trophies and the rest promise themselves "next year."
Occasionally, special exhibitions are arranged to which the general public is invited. In September, 2006 we invited former Canadian and World Champion Snooker player Cliff Thorburn, who played a series of matches against some of our best players and then regaled us with a stupendous trick-shot exhibition.
New members are always welcome so check the schedule to see a match and come introduce yourselves.
